I am a student in the biology department, and I aspire to pursue a career in medicine, so I found this talk extremely interesting. The lack of integration of the humanities in scientific disciplines is a real concern. I agree we should be working on ways to create a bridge between the sciences and the humanities. I think this would improve interactions and communication among the scientific community and create a much more pleasant working environment. In fact, it seems to me a great possibility that by integrating the humanities with the sciences, we will develop new points of view that provide innovative solutions to end the uncertainties within the sciences or at least understand them a little more. These discussions really give me hope for the future of science.
I found this meeting very interesting and important because it makes you see how important is science in our lives and how it’s all around us. I completely agree that science needs to be communicated in a way were everyone can understand so that people can understand how important science is in our lives even when they think that what they do in their day to day science doesn’t apply to it. I liked the part were Gundula said that people should accept when the science is wrong, and don’t be ashamed to say it. There are a lot of people that don’t accept their mistakes and because of this a lot of people suffer from it. Science should be teach in every major because it allows us to learn about different ethical values and how to grow and defend different point of views. If you think about it, science it’s like art, art is all around us and we benefit from it and learn from it just like science.
Between my jobs and studies, I’m currently in the communications (military), pharmaceutical and food production fields. In all of these fields I’ve noticed the misinformation and poor integration of humanities in general. This conference made me understand the importance of the integration, because while analyzing past events, many sad outcomes could have been prevented or at least gone through a smoother process for better results with the incorporation of this discipline.
I really appreciated this talk and the topic of this discussion. Being a student from the biology department I strongly agree with what was said about students not knowing about the history of biology. Fortunately, here in our institution, I had the opportunity of taking a history of biology course last semester. Through this course, I was able to understand how some of the biggest names of humanities like Aristotle, Leonardo Da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, and many more built and shaped what we know today as biology. However, it wasn’t until being a part of this talk today that I realized how important knowing about the history of biology, and science in general, was. I believe that more courses about biology’s history should be offered so that students are aware of how biology has changed over time and how these changes have been communicated by these great philosophers and scientists of the past. It is our goal as students to keep furthering the field of biology, so what better way than to learn from the pioneers of philosophy, communication, and sciences.
I found the discussion about uncertainty particularly interesting, as I have previously struggled with a discomfort with uncertainty while learning about science, particularly physics. However, I now view it as a crucial factor for the value of science, as it permits development and the (re)evolution of the field. Learning about philosophy also led me to recognize the value of uncertainty, which also made me recognize the value of philosophical education, not only in science, but in every field of knowledge.
This meeting was excellent in expanding concepts such as art and education. It helped me see how they shape the Humanities through time. My favorite part was philosophy in science, and how the modern world seems to disregard it. I especially found the concepts for communicating science very interesting, like epistemic humility.
It made me wonder:
– Will new improvements or discoveries in art, science, and education change the Humanities class we currently know?
– Is it a misconception to perceive a Humanities class as equal to a History class?
These questions are intriguing to me, so I will do my research on them.
It was a wonderful talk that brought many topics that are very relevant today to light for many. Especially with regards to scientific communication and how scholars have failed to convey their knowledge properly to large parts of the population. I think it’s great to have more talks like these during the semester that can help not only discuss the problem but providing solutions that can be applied in the immediate future.

This meeting titled “Humanities Questions, Scientific Uncertainty”, opens a different point of view for those immersed in the world of science, people like me, often ignoring the repercussions of every disseverment and how these may impact our society. The topic about ethics and how history in science is often overlooked without weighing how it impacts what we know, and we are getting to know today leaves a lot to think about how things are being done. A comment that has been stuck in my mind is how often (if not always) science, mathematics and engineering courses are taught without providing a historical context of the topics taught and how they have become part of what we must learn today.
I wholeheartedly agree with today’s talk about how important it is to connect humanity with how science is taught. Ethics is essential to every discipline and a fundamental part of science findings. The science community should reinforce the importance of honesty and values because without them credibility becomes non-existent and scientific communications get overshadowed by uncertainty. The world may never live up to ethics completely, but I think that implementing the disciplines mentioned in how science is taught is the right step forward.
It was a very insightful meeting since these topics aren’t discussed regularly in my field of study. I agree that science and humanities should go hand in hand. Because the complete disregard of humanities in stem majors causes more harm than good to the future professionals.

Como estudiante de Biotecnología Industrial es bastante común el no prestarles mucha atención a materias como las humanidades, cuando debería ser todo lo contrario debido a la gran importancia que tienen en nuestra sociedad. Siempre tendemos a pensar que las carreras de estudios no están relacionadas con las humanidades o aspectos sociales cuando es todo lo contrario. Las humanidades, aunque no se piense mucho, están estrechamente relacionadas con muchas carreras de estudio y más aun con las ciencias. En la charla se nos proveyó una perspectiva más amplia sobre la importancia que tienen las humanidades y lo muy relacionadas que están con las distintas carreras de estudio. Esta charla fue muy interesante y pienso que se deberían promover más conversatorios como estos ya que nos amplia sobre muchos temas, también nos ayudan a educarnos sobre temas de los cuales no se les presta la atención y relevancia que merecen.
Esta conferencia me hizo dar cuenta de cuántos estudiantes de carreras relacionadas a las ciencias no están conscientes sobre la importancia de las humanidades en su educación. Es fundamental saber cómo comunicar y compartir información confiable y verídica con la comunidad. Cuando se comunica información, hay que tener en cuenta cómo afectará a la audiencia a la que se presenta, por lo que se requiere una investigación a fondo para autentificar el material. Además, la forma de ofrecer la información al público puede influir en su interpretación; hay que ser consciente del tipo de público al que nos dirigimos.
Es interesante conocer las muchas maneras en que el estudio de las humanidades influye en tu día a día, especialmente en un entorno académico.
Como estudiante de ciencia animal, aspiro en un futuro lograr ejercer una carrera en medicina veterinaria. Al igual que en cualquier otra ciencia, las humanidades deberían ser más atendidas al estudiar este tipo de disciplinas. Usualmente se piensa que no son necesarias, cuando la verdad es que son fundamentales para entender a la sociedad más a fondo, al igual que establecer relaciones saludables con los que nos rodean y así brindar un buen servicio como profesional. Esta charla fue excelente ya que abrió los ojos de muchos estudiantes y ayudó a entender la importancia y el rol de las humanidades en otros ámbitos de trabajo.
This was a very insightful and interesting meeting, discussing topics that are very important nowadays though most don’t realize this. By bridging the gap between the sciences and humanities new and different insights in these fields can be made that wouldn’t come about unless this integration happened.
En la charla se expuso la importancia de las ciencias y las humanidades en el diario vivir. Mas allá, de como van de mano a mano en los aspectos de la vida y casi ni se habla de su relación. Muchos que se especializan en la rama de las ciencias no asimilan la importancia de las humanidades en el desarrollo de su educación y vida profesional. Una charla de suma importancia, llena de información y enriquecimiento educativo.
Me pareció muy interesante cómo se tocó el tema de la conexión que existe entre las humanidades y la ciencia, ya que en muchas ocasiones no se nos enseña a personas que estamos en carreras de ciencia a verlo así, sino más bien a verlo como cosas completamente aparte. Incluso, he llegado a escuchar como personas que estudian carreras de ciencia, desde la ignorancia y desconocimiento, dicen que es innecesario tener cursos de humanidades en sus currículos. Creo que si empezaramos a enseñar las ciencias con una perspectiva hacia las humanidades, pudiéramos realizar estudios desde otros puntos de vistas y tener grandes avances.
Greetings I will like to share my thoughts of the discussed meeting: In the face of such a divided and challenging 20th century, it is necessary to approach the sciences from a humanist perspective; that is to say, that a dialogue takes place between the two. And that they find a way where they go hand in hand; contrary to being separated as many believe they should be. This meeting, “Humanities Issues, Scientific Uncertainty”; it helped us understand that there cannot be a lack of communication between the sciences and the humanities because it would keep us in a state of stagnation where the most important issues within the sciences themselves would not be addressed; which could only be understood if the relationship and dialogue occurs between the two. As geology student, I understood the importance to knows the history, the past, to look better what happens todays and how we respond. Thanks for the opportunity to had conversations like this one.

En general, la conferencia me pareció súper interesante. Como científico en formación me parece importante reconocer cómo las humanidades se pueden involucrar en el procedimiento científico para comunicar, explicar y exponer simple y correctamente los resultados obtenidos porque, al final del día, el propósito de las ciencias es generar conocimiento para todas las personas, no solo para la élite científica y/o educada. De igual manera, la ciencia muchas veces trata temas sensitivos cuyos resultados pudieran impactar otras disciplinas e incluso la vida de muchas personas. Es por esto que la ética, el sentido de responsabilidad y transparencia es clave al momento de comunicar lo estudiado y es en eso que las humanidades están ahí para ayudarnos, aunque muchas veces se pasan por alto o no se reconoce su utilidad.
Para los científicos, el estudio de las humanidades es de suma importancia. Los profesionales de la salud deben seguir instruyéndose en estos temas y aprender más sobre las diferentes culturas y aspectos psicosociales. Esto los ayudara a ser mejores ser humanos y mejores profesionales. Instruirnos en estos temas porque además de un beneficio individualizado, tiene beneficios a nivel sistémico. Con estos conocimientos se puede mejorar nuestro sistema de salud.
La conferencia a pesar de resultarme interesante también logró informarme más sobre el tema. En parte es triste ver como las humanidades no han sido del todo integradas al campo de las ciencias ya que tienen mucha relación. Las humanidades en parte nos ayudan a entender el surgimiento y la importancia de las ciencias a través de los años. Así como pienso que todo el mundo debería tomar cursos de biología también deberían ser las humanidades, para tener un trasfondo completo. Las humanidades permiten que el ser humano vean con otra perspectiva el transcurso de distintos eventos importantes.
Al final del día, el uso principal de la ciencia hoy en día es mejorar la condición humana. Al quitar las humanidades de la ciencia y no darle la importancia que se merece, estamos incumpliendo con su propósito principal. Creo que todo estudiante que dude sobre porque tienen que tomar una cierta cantidad de créditos de clases de humanidades para graduarse cuando ellos estudian algo en STEM se beneficiarían mucho de esta charla.
Las humanidades son sumamente importantes para la ciencias. Es el aspecto que provoca cuestionamiento de lo ético y no ético. Nos asegura que los protocolos científicos y experimentaciones no vallan por encima de los derechos de las personas y animales. Nos ayuda a tomar decisiones imperativas que requieren una respuesta inmediata. También, nos ayuda a evitar repetir errores del pasado que han deteriorado los derechos humanos. Es importante tener un parámetro y balance de lo que se debe realizar en la ciencia y lo que no debemos hacer. Esto puede beneficiar la manera en que todos aquellos que no son del mundo de la ciencia se sientan más cómodos y cree más credibilidad en el método científico. Incluso, cabe mencionar que la ciencia es un arte que crea y explora lo desconocido. Como mencionado en clase, el arte puede tener diferentes perspectivas e interpretaciones, diferentes tipos de arte, formas de expresarse y diversas maneras de crear arte; lo mismo aplica a las ciencias.
Gracias por enfatizar la importancia de las humanidades en distintas areas en la ciencia. Soy estudiante de psicologia y considero que las humanidades son escenciales en todos los departamentos. Apoyo completamente que debemos promover mas importancia a las mismas.

Science and humanities are two fields that are often seen as polar opposites. While Science is concerned with empirical evidence, humanities is concerned with exploring themes such as ethics and morality. However, there’s more to it than meets the eye. The truth is science and humanities are deeply intertwined, and one cannot fully thrive without the other.
Science, at its core, is about answering questions about the natural world. However, as I’ve mentioned before, in our crusade to understanding our universe around us, we must also consider the ethical implications of our actions. By this, I’m referring to examining our beliefs and values. As we human beings are capable of developing a deeper understanding of the world around us. This is where humanities comes into play. In turn, it helps us make informed decisions about the direction of scientific research and the potential impact it may have on our society.
In addition, the study of humanities can help scientists avoid repeating past mistakes. Ever heard of good old saying “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”? That’s exactly what it is alluding when we exclude humanities from scientific research. The study of history, for example, can inform us about the ethical implications of past scientific experiments and their consequences. To name some examples, there was the Chernobyl disaster, The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, illegal Reproductive cloning, The Bhopal Disaster, and more. With that in mind, humanities can help us make better decisions about the direction of scientific research in the future. This intersection of science and humanities can lead to groundbreaking discoveries. For example, the study of language and linguistics have led to the development of Artificial Intelligence. This language processing is rapidly evolving every second, every minute, every hour, every day that goes by. It is tremendously capable of great wonders, but also that of indecent horrors if not regulated soon enough.
To summarize what I have stated so far, science needs humanities to thrive in order for each to bloom like a flower. By recognizing the ethics and morality required when advancing our understanding of the world around us, we can achieve a more well-rounded approach to scientific discovery and innovation. Remember, there’s a fine line between what we THINK is the correct decision vs what IS the right decision.

Esta charla fue excelente ya que abrió los ojos de muchos estudiantes y ayudó a entender la importancia y el rol de las humanidades en otros ámbitos de trabajo.
This was a very insightful and interesting meeting, discussing topics that are very important nowadays though most don’t realize this. By bridging the gap between the sciences and humanities new and different insights in these fields can be made that wouldn’t come about unless this integration happened.
En la charla se expuso la importancia de las ciencias y las humanidades en el diario vivir. Mas allá, de como van de mano a mano en los aspectos de la vida y casi ni se habla de su relación. Muchos que se especializan en la rama de las ciencias no asimilan la importancia de las humanidades en el desarrollo de su educación y vida profesional. Una charla de suma importancia, llena de información y enriquecimiento educativo.
Me pareció muy interesante cómo se tocó el tema de la conexión que existe entre las humanidades y la ciencia, ya que en muchas ocasiones no se nos enseña a personas que estamos en carreras de ciencia a verlo así, sino más bien a verlo como cosas completamente aparte. Incluso, he llegado a escuchar como personas que estudian carreras de ciencia, desde la ignorancia y desconocimiento, dicen que es innecesario tener cursos de humanidades en sus currículos. Creo que si empezaramos a enseñar las ciencias con una perspectiva hacia las humanidades, pudiéramos realizar estudios desde otros puntos de vistas y tener grandes avances.
Greetings I will like to share my thoughts of the discussed meeting: In the face of such a divided and challenging 20th century, it is necessary to approach the sciences from a humanist perspective; that is to say, that a dialogue takes place between the two. And that they find a way where they go hand in hand; contrary to being separated as many believe they should be. This meeting, “Humanities Issues, Scientific Uncertainty”; it helped us understand that there cannot be a lack of communication between the sciences and the humanities because it would keep us in a state of stagnation where the most important issues within the sciences themselves would not be addressed; which could only be understood if the relationship and dialogue occurs between the two. As geology student, I understood the importance to knows the history, the past, to look better what happens todays and how we respond. Thanks for the opportunity to had conversations like this one.
La encontré una charla interesante, rara y confuso. Me gusto el como relacionaron la ciencia con las humanidades. Pero rara en la parte q estaban hablando de como les gustaba le incertidumbre cuando la ciencia es todo lo contrario y lo q busca es la respuesta a todo
En general, la conferencia me pareció súper interesante. Como científico en formación me parece importante reconocer cómo las humanidades se pueden involucrar en el procedimiento científico para comunicar, explicar y exponer simple y correctamente los resultados obtenidos porque, al final del día, el propósito de las ciencias es generar conocimiento para todas las personas, no solo para la élite científica y/o educada. De igual manera, la ciencia muchas veces trata temas sensitivos cuyos resultados pudieran impactar otras disciplinas e incluso la vida de muchas personas. Es por esto que la ética, el sentido de responsabilidad y transparencia es clave al momento de comunicar lo estudiado y es en eso que las humanidades están ahí para ayudarnos, aunque muchas veces se pasan por alto o no se reconoce su utilidad.
Para los científicos, el estudio de las humanidades es de suma importancia. Los profesionales de la salud deben seguir instruyéndose en estos temas y aprender más sobre las diferentes culturas y aspectos psicosociales. Esto los ayudara a ser mejores ser humanos y mejores profesionales. Instruirnos en estos temas porque además de un beneficio individualizado, tiene beneficios a nivel sistémico. Con estos conocimientos se puede mejorar nuestro sistema de salud.
La conferencia a pesar de resultarme interesante también logró informarme más sobre el tema. En parte es triste ver como las humanidades no han sido del todo integradas al campo de las ciencias ya que tienen mucha relación. Las humanidades en parte nos ayudan a entender el surgimiento y la importancia de las ciencias a través de los años. Así como pienso que todo el mundo debería tomar cursos de biología también deberían ser las humanidades, para tener un trasfondo completo. Las humanidades permiten que el ser humano vean con otra perspectiva el transcurso de distintos eventos importantes.
Al final del día, el uso principal de la ciencia hoy en día es mejorar la condición humana. Al quitar las humanidades de la ciencia y no darle la importancia que se merece, estamos incumpliendo con su propósito principal. Creo que todo estudiante que dude sobre porque tienen que tomar una cierta cantidad de créditos de clases de humanidades para graduarse cuando ellos estudian algo en STEM se beneficiarían mucho de esta charla.
Las humanidades son sumamente importantes para la ciencias. Es el aspecto que provoca cuestionamiento de lo ético y no ético. Nos asegura que los protocolos científicos y experimentaciones no vallan por encima de los derechos de las personas y animales. Nos ayuda a tomar decisiones imperativas que requieren una respuesta inmediata. También, nos ayuda a evitar repetir errores del pasado que han deteriorado los derechos humanos. Es importante tener un parámetro y balance de lo que se debe realizar en la ciencia y lo que no debemos hacer. Esto puede beneficiar la manera en que todos aquellos que no son del mundo de la ciencia se sientan más cómodos y cree más credibilidad en el método científico. Incluso, cabe mencionar que la ciencia es un arte que crea y explora lo desconocido. Como mencionado en clase, el arte puede tener diferentes perspectivas e interpretaciones, diferentes tipos de arte, formas de expresarse y diversas maneras de crear arte; lo mismo aplica a las ciencias.
Gracias por enfatizar la importancia de las humanidades en distintas areas en la ciencia. Soy estudiante de psicologia y considero que las humanidades son escenciales en todos los departamentos. Apoyo completamente que debemos promover mas importancia a las mismas.
En general, encontré la conferencia altamente interesante. Como científico en ciernes, considero crucial reconocer las formas en que las humanidades pueden estar involucradas en el proceso científico para comunicar, explicar y presentar resultados de manera simple y precisa. Después de todo, el propósito de la ciencia es generar conocimiento para todas las personas, no solo para un grupo en particular de cientificos. Además, la ciencia a menudo trata con temas delicados cuyos resultados podrían afectar a otras disciplinas e incluso a la vida de muchas personas. Por lo tanto, la ética, el sentido de responsabilidad y la transparencia son clave al comunicar los hallazgos de investigación, y aquí es donde las humanidades pueden ser de ayuda, aunque a menudo su utilidad se pasa por alto o no se reconoce.
Normalmente no pensamos de la ciencia en conjunto con las humanidades. Sin embargo, tiene sentido que las humanidades se integren a la ciencia. Esto nos prepararía mejor, no solo para ser un buen científico, sino también para saber comunicar lo que hacemos.
Actualmente soy estudiante de quimica y nunca me habia detenido a pensar en la importancia de las humanidades en mi propio campo de ciencias. Fue muy interesante la forma en la que la profesora lo explicó.

Science and humanities are two fields that are often seen as polar opposites. While Science is concerned with empirical evidence, humanities is concerned with exploring themes such as ethics and morality. However, there’s more to it than meets the eye. The truth is science and humanities are deeply intertwined, and one cannot fully thrive without the other.
Science, at its core, is about answering questions about the natural world. However, as I’ve mentioned before, in our crusade to understanding our universe around us, we must also consider the ethical implications of our actions. By this, I’m referring to examining our beliefs and values. As we human beings are capable of developing a deeper understanding of the world around us. This is where humanities comes into play. In turn, it helps us make informed decisions about the direction of scientific research and the potential impact it may have on our society.
In addition, the study of humanities can help scientists avoid repeating past mistakes. Ever heard of good old saying “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”? That’s exactly what it is alluding when we exclude humanities from scientific research. The study of history, for example, can inform us about the ethical implications of past scientific experiments and their consequences. To name some examples, there was the Chernobyl disaster, The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, illegal Reproductive cloning, The Bhopal Disaster, and more. With that in mind, humanities can help us make better decisions about the direction of scientific research in the future. This intersection of science and humanities can lead to groundbreaking discoveries. For example, the study of language and linguistics have led to the development of Artificial Intelligence. This language processing is rapidly evolving every second, every minute, every hour, every day that goes by. It is tremendously capable of great wonders, but also that of indecent horrors if not regulated soon enough.
To summarize what I have stated so far, science needs humanities to thrive in order for each to bloom like a flower. By recognizing the ethics and morality required when advancing our understanding of the world around us, we can achieve a more well-rounded approach to scientific discovery and innovation. Remember, there’s a fine line between what we THINK is the correct decision vs what IS the right decision.
Es importante reconocer que como seres humanos debemos apreciar nuestra historia y conocerla para no cometer los mismos errores. Hablando de esto cabe decir que aprender sobre las humanidades es necesario ya que durante la vida no todo se relaciona sobre lo que nos dedicamos, es importante sobre todo un poco y no hay nada más fascinante como conocer de nuestros antepasados, de personas como nosotros fueron forjando el mundo en el que hoy nos encontramos y el cual nos toca a nosotros mantener y convertirlo en un mejor lugar.
